Oakwood, GA – On Saturday, September 25th, 65 runners gather to run the 9th annual Awesome 80s 5K at the race’s new home on UNG Campus.  This year’s race faced strategic, logistic, and social challenges with persistence concerns of COVID-19 variants.

The South Hall Rotary club was enthusiastic even though they thought they may see a drop in numbers. “We knew the race needed to go on to bring recognition to the Food Pantry and help in raising funds to support the UNG food pantry and other organizations in need in the South Hall Community,” stated President Brenda McMillian.

This year’s event relocated from downtown Flowery Branch to the University of North Georgia campus to provide safety for the runners.  Sponsors from around the community contributed toward the ‘80s inspired theme.  Students from the Interact clubs at Johnson High School and Flowery Branch High School showed up to cheer on the participants and help point them in the right direction.

After the race, Dominique Allen from the UNG Food Pantry helped to draw numbers for door prizes of participants who brought and donated food items.  Door prizes included ‘80s inspired board games, chia pets, and even lawn darts for the winner.

“The race helped the club clear close to $5,000 for causes in a year where we weren’t sure we could even host this race,” stated Treasurer Rena Pendley.

Plans are being made for the 10th Annual Run to continue the UNG course but move to a night race in May.  Stay tuned for more details.
